PRESS RELEASE: SAVE THE GEORGE AND DRAGON CAMPAIGN A Public Meeting was held on 14th May 2010 in Alston Town Hall to canvas the idea of a community buy-out of the George and Dragon Pub in Garrigill. Over 100 people attended and 50 apologies and expressions of support were received, including from Rory Stewart MP and Gordon Nicholson, Leader of Eden District Council. The speakers were Mark Haslam, of CAMRA; Gareth Nash of Cooperative and Mutual Solutions; and Richard Turner, member of Eden District Council and Chair of the AONB. Mark Haslam, as CAMRA's campaign manager, was able to contribute information from his experience of over 30 campaigns to re-open rural pubs. Gareth Nash spoke about the Co-operative model, which can be applied to a wide range of businesses, and which is gaining momenturm as rural services come increasingly under threat. Both organisations offered professional advice and support in the event that the community is able to purchase and run the George and Dragon. Richard Turner spoke of the Council's commitment to the rural economy and indicated his full support for any initiative to protect local services within the village. As an exploratory measure, pledge forms have been distributed across the whole of Alston Moor and to the 500 signatories on the online petition. At this stage people are being asked to indicate their willingness to invest in a community buy-out. If there is sufficient interest, the next stage would be to write to the owner, offering to purchase the pub and seeking an independent valuation. A business plan and prospectus will be prepared and on acquiring the pub, an executive board would appoint a tenant to run the business. People interested in the proposed Co-operative can find information and pledge forms at our website, www.savethegeorgeanddragon.co.uk. Mike Povey Chair, Save the George and Dragon Steering Group |

Standing Room Only At The George And Dragon Public Meeting Over £50K Raised On The Night
It was standing room only at the Save The George And Dragon meeting in Alston Town Hall on Friday night. The meeting had been held to guage support for a community buy-out of the George and Dragon pub in Garrigill, after it had been closed and boarded up by the current owner. The audience listened to speakers Mark Haslem from the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA), Gareth Nash from the Cooperative and Mutual Solutions, and Richard Turner member of Eden District Council and Chairman of the AONB. The option of forming a co-operative with the view to purchase the George and Dragon was presented to the audience, and then a question and answer session followed where the audience were able to put their questions to the experts on the panel.
There was overwhelming support for the co-operative amongst the audience, and people were asked to pledge money to support the venture. Over fifty thousand pounds (£50,000) was pledged on the night, giving the co-operative fund a tremendous start. The Save The George and Dragon committee was formed after the owner of the George and Dragon closed the pub at the end of 2008. Since then the group has campaigned to keep the pub open. At the started of summer 2009 the owner relented and opened the pub with a very limited service, but closed again at the end of summer. Then in February this year (2010) the owner left the premises and boarded up all the doors and windows. The co-operative pledge form can be downloaded here |
